Short Medical Report

Emmanuel’s burns extend over the front of his chest and neck  up to his ears and mouth and under his arms. His hands are also affected.

The worst areas are now pink where the pigmented skin has been lost completely and nerve endings are exposed, but these areas are now covered and are no longer raw.

The infected areas on his neck, chest and lips are improving and should continue to get better. Thick scar tissue has formed across the front of his neck, under his arms and in areas across his chest. This tends to shrink and is restricting the movements of his neck and arms. We have encouraged him to move these areas gently when his pain killers are working. Pain is likely to be a problem for a long time but we have left enough codeine to last for several months.

His anti-biotics should be coming to an end now and hopefully the infection should be under control. The movement of his neck and arms will probably be permanently rather restricted and stiff and his disfigurement will be difficult for him to come to terms with. The pink areas of skin will burn in the sun as they have lost the protective pigmentation and this is also going to be a problem for him.
